Neither forest nor orchard: our mother plants grow in a small meadow fringed with woodland. Fig and hazel trees are surrounded by oaks, hornbeams, alder buckthorns, wild hazels and a few firs that shelter them. Facing due south, they catch the morning and evening sun; at midday, old native oaks give them shade. At their feet, the original grasses and herbs stay in place. Thyme and soft fruit join them.
Leaves, twigs whole or chipped (ramial chipped wood), kitchen-garden leftovers, burdock: we cover the soil, and its life does the rest. To get started, a little manure from the hen house and from horses.
A generous watering at planting, then the rain, kept in tanks for hard times. Watered sparingly, a plant drives its roots deep.
Broadfork, shovel, pruning shears, saw: no ploughing, no chemicals, hardly any engine.
Plants born and raised here, outdoors: hardy, deeply rooted, already used to the climate of Haute-Saintonge.
